The Indian music industry is in shock following the sudden demise of Zubeen Garg, who passed away at the age of 52 in Singapore on September 19, 2025. Widely celebrated for his soulful voice and versatility, Zubeen’s untimely death has left fans across India and beyond heartbroken.
The singer was in Singapore to attend the North East India Festival. During a yacht trip, Zubeen went swimming but reportedly removed his life jacket after finding it uncomfortable. Moments later, lifeguards discovered him unconscious. Despite prompt rescue and CPR, he was declared dead at Singapore General Hospital.
In response, the Government of Assam has declared a three-day state mourning from September 20–22. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that Zubeen’s mortal remains will be flown back to Guwahati. His body will be kept at Sarusajai Stadium for public tribute before the final rites.
Tributes have poured in from across the nation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and artists such as Papon, Shaan, and Vishal Dadlani expressed condolences, remembering him as a voice that transcended generations. Fans in Assam gathered in public spaces, lighting candles and singing his songs to honor the beloved icon.
Best known for the Bollywood track “Ya Ali” from Gangster (2006), Zubeen Garg also recorded thousands of songs in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and other languages. His contributions made him a cultural bridge and a symbol of Assamese pride. Though he is gone, his music will continue to resonate with millions.
